JOB DESCRIPTION

The Windstream Allworx R&D team (located in Rochester, NY) designs, develops, and tests the products that drive the company’s growth. Our small R&D Quality Assurance team tests the entire Windstream product line – VoIP Phone Systems, IP Phones, PC applications and Mobile applications. Designing a fully integrated product offering from the ground up enables Windstream to provide customers with a comprehensive, effective solution to their business communication needs. The contributions of each member of the R&D team are critical to the success of the company - we have pride in the products we create, and our company has a great amount of pride in us.

We are looking to hire into the R&D Quality Assurance team a talented, articulate technical writing professional to create, review, and maintain our product literature and training material.  QA team members are involved with Windstream products from the requirements stage through release.  You will work with members of the Sales, Support, and R&D teams to review the requirements for both our current and next-generation products, and then design the appropriate online and printed documentation, and verify that the products meet those requirements. 


SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Take ownership of the product literature methodologies as well as documentation and departmental procedures.
  • Provide User Interface design feedback.
  • Responsible for creating and updating product literature according to scheduling and delivery requirements.
  • Produce video training content for Windstream Allworx products and features to support Allworx partner training
  • Self-motivation, discipline, rigor, attention to detail, communication skills.
  • Participation in all aspects of document development, including research, task analysis, document design, development, and technical reviews.
  • Interface with product teams representing the documentation group.
  • Analyze technical specifications and interview relevant team members. Understand requirements and develop document designs and strategies to match these requirements.
  • Analyze new product features, problem reports, and software fixes in order to update documentation sets.
  • Participate in projects focused on improving documentation processes and integrating into the product development process. Define documentation strategies and be a key contributor in every step of the product design life cycle.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and communication (verbal, phone, listening, written and editing) skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Bachelor s degree in English, Journalism, Technical Writing, Computer Science or other relevant degree, or the equivalent in experience and education.
  • Must have 5 or more years of experience with translating engineering information into clear, well written, task-oriented print and online documentation.
  • Experience writing hardware/software documentation and departmental Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions.
  • Experience developing global processes and procedures manuals for standardization.
  • Experience testing the accuracy of documentation by running products in a test environment.
  • Experience as a lead writer for multiple, simultaneous projects.
  • Experience supervising, managing workloads, or mentoring junior writers/illustrators.
  • Proficient with FrameMaker, Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator, Adobe Captivate, and other standard publishing tools.

Helpful:

  • Experience with audio/telephony
  • Experience with network protocols e.g. TCP, UDP, DHCP, SIP, etc.
  • Flexibility with changing priorities and the ability to provide testing support
  • Familiarity with other industry and/or regulatory standards and requirements, e.g. EMC, ESD, Product Safety
  • Familiarity with lab equipment and environments
  • Prior experience of User Interface design

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:College degree in Engineering or a related field and 3-5 years professional level experience with 0-1 year supervisory experience; or 7+ years professional level related Engineering/Technical experience with 0-1 year supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and professional level related Engineering/Technical experience required.
