The Labor Senior Accountant oversees some of Windstream’s largest cash costs.  The Senior works closely with the Accountant II on monthly variance analysis and reconciliation of salary and benefit expenses and plays a critical role in delivering accurate reporting and collaborating regularly with Human Resources (HR), Internal Reporting, segment finance teams, and Financial Planning.


 Other duties include:

  • Review general ledger entries recorded by Accountants I/II
  • Perform a detailed review of balance sheet reconciliations for Labor and Cash
  • Analyze and report on monthly financial statement variances assigned to Labor Accounting
  • Work closely with HR, Financial Planning, and segment finance teams to ensure salaries, incentive compensation, benefits expense is accurately and fairly presented
  • Work closely with the Payment Assurance Group to ensure reconciling cash items are cleared from reconciliations timely
  • Execute internal controls and SOX compliance in daily work as well as coordinate with internal auditors and the external auditor to ensure Sarbanes-Oxley process documentation accurately reflects the procedures performed
  • Recruit and coach team members (guide and mentor entry level accounting staff)
  • Other responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
    • Confirm accounting records are maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), company policies and legal agreements / contracts
    • Monitor and analyze department workstreams to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy
    • Advise staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions
    • Assist in coordination of the internal and external financial audit processes
    • Take the lead on special projects as they come up
  • Overtime at various points throughout the month should be expected.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and workflow and meet assigned deadlines
  • Strong understanding of all US GAAP and willingness to research and determine appropriate accounting application
  • Strong understanding of relevant accounting functions and related internal controls
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to research and reconcile difficult accounts
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies to maximize performance, creativity, problem solving, and results
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Detail oriented, and organized in work
  • Proactive and independent; flexible and enthusiastic
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint) and experience using JD Edwards is desirable
  • CPA preferred
Minimum Requirements:

College degree in Accounting and/or Finance and 3-5 years professional level experience with 1+ years supervisory experience for roles with supervision; or 7+ years professional level related experience with 1+ years supervisory experience for roles with supervision; or an equivalent combination of education and professional level related experience required.
