General Summary:
The Security Engineer II performs implementation design and testing, consultation, service provisioning, turn-up, and quality assurance for Windstream Managed Network Security products.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Handle customer design review and pre-implementation planning, pre-install configurations, and complete final install and verification of firewalls and other Windstream managed security platforms within an enterprise-class Security Operations Center environment. 
  • Maintain an effective and comprehensive record of customer service information as orders progress into ESOC’s custody through a variety of order flows and information-management systems.
  • Represent Windstream and the ESOC by acting as a knowledgeable technical resource in both internal and customer-facing communications regarding the design and implementation of managed network security products.
  • Carry out proof-of-concept testing, troubleshooting, and documentation as needed to support service implementation and quality-assurance goals.
  • Participate in a periodic on-call rotation to support continuing team efforts outside of standard business hours.
  • Maintain currency in ESOC and Windstream product and service offerings, as well as all processes and procedures related to the provision and delivery thereof.
Typical Activities:
  • Attend scheduled conference calls with internal resources and customers for pre-implementation consultation as needed to facilitate delivery of security services.
  • Procure hardware and provision resources as needed to satisfy incoming service orders.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation to support integration of new customers and services into Windstream’s production maintenance lifecycle.
  • Actively monitor assigned task-tracking queues to complete disconnects, modifications to existing services, and other assigned order-related tasks as needed.
  • Assist other Engineers in resolution of technical issues arising from implementation efforts.
  • Coordinate with Team Leads and higher-tier Engineers and Analysts, as well as vendor support staff and other Windstream resources, to identify, isolate, and remediate workflow-impacting and/or service-impacting issues as they arise.
Work Complexity:

An Engineer should possess a sufficient understanding of basic local-area networking concepts--including but not limited to common LAN Services, IPV4/IPV6/NAT/PAT, sub-netting, applications, patterns of host interactions, and the role that perimeter security plays in a customer's network so as to ensure that the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data and services provided by their network are not compromised by the changes recommended and/or implemented by the Engineer on the customer's behalf.  This directive would encompass, at minimum:
  • Fundamental understanding of the OSI model and the ability to apply concepts while troubleshooting individual customer issues.  Understanding of IP Networking including, but not limited to, IPV4, IPV6, NAT, PAT and sub-netting.
  • Ability to speak competently in regards to customer’s networks and network interconnects at all scales, and the Windstream Managed Network Security product suite.  
  • Implementation and support of all features and functions of next-generation firewall devices, including:  VPN configurations accommodating a range of topologies, integration of customer-owned AAA platforms, high-availability architectures of all kinds, and the full suite of Fortinet-supported UTM functionality.
  • Advanced understanding of all Managed Network Security platforms and the products and services supported by ESOC.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Self-starter, highly motivated.  Inclination toward self-study and continuing education preferred. 
  • Exceptional communication skills (written and verbal) and experience in a customer-facing service role.
  • 1+ year experience configuring and troubleshooting perimeter firewall devices, including advanced features such as UTM, IPsec tunnels, identity-based policy controls, etc.
  • 1+ year experience monitoring and/or implementing basic SIEM and network monitoring services.  
  • Basic to intermediate understanding of BGP and MPLS, and 1+ year experience implementing WAN failover configurations and secure tunnels (IPsec)
  • Familiarity with industry-standard network security controls, policies, and procedures. 
  • Vendor specific certifications (FCNSA, FCNSP, CCNA, CCNP, etc.)


Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:    College degree in Engineering or a related field and 2-4 years professional level experience; or 6+ years professional level related Engineering/Technical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and professional level related Engineering/Technical experience required.
