Infrastructure Senior Engineer / Consultant Position (Remote)

In this role, you will be a key player in supporting a business-critical environment as part of a specialized agile team with smart, passionate engineers.  As the technical lead, you will be responsible for platform stability across multiple sites, and will assist with new deployments, configurations, and related projects. We strongly believe that collaboration enables better products, so you will work closely with product owners, UX designers, and other engineers to design solutions. As our hardware needs and applications continue to evolve, you will have a significant voice in deciding which best practices and tooling we adopt. 

About the job:  

Job Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Technical leader for the full Infrastructure stack, consisting of:

  • VMware vCenter / ESXi 6.x platform with vSAN
  • 300+ Physical Servers (largely Cisco UCS blades and rack servers)
  • NetApp SAN storage
  • Cisco UCS+NetApp (“Flexpod”) environments
  • Cisco UCS Manager and Fabric Interconnects, Cisco Nexus and ACI switch networking
  • Veeam and NetBackup, with AWS off-site backups
  • Public / Hybrid Cloud integration, with Cloud Container orchestration

Discover and fully grasp the current environment, to gain in-depth comprehension of the overall architectural design, including upstream / indirect components (switches, routing, firewalls, etc.).

Validate configurations / practices and recommend architectural changes where appropriate, per best practices and technological advances. 

Advise and support the Infrastructure team on everything related to platform / site reliability, maintaining uptime, increasing efficiencies, and driving growth.

Capacity planning -- Track compute and storage resource & usage trends to proactively forecast upcoming needs.

Assist with day-to-day workload, support tickets, and new requests involving diagnosis, troubleshooting, and resolution of complex problems with vCenter, ESXi hosts, VM’s, storage, networking, and backups.

Act as point-person / liaison for technical Q&A, problem solving, guidance, planning, and direction.

VMware PowerCLI scripting.  Configuration of Cisco and Juniper switches.  Zoning setup for SAN switches.

Ability to conceptualize complex projects & tasks, and filter / communicate the break-down of specific requirements for each subset in the infrastructure stack. 

Lead triage efforts and provide troubleshooting support for any outages and issues.

Act as principal on POC / lab / pipeline project discovery discussions, understanding hardware requirements and configurations required, and assisting with deployments.

Leverage public cloud offerings and deployments where applicable.

Handle vendor relations and negotiations around hardware needs, licensing, and support agreements.

Possess a team player mentality, with the ability to perform in high-pressure, challenging situations.

Partner with engineers, product owners, UX designers, and web developers to leverage the best parts of the stack for each function, and design intuitive interfaces.


Qualifications: 

Skills and experience: 

Extensive knowledge of applicable technology stack, as listed above

  • Strong communication, people, and presentation skills

  • Aptitude to solve complex problems, evaluate information, and arrive at creative solutions

  • Ability to plan, lead, and support cross-functional projects, spanning multiple components

  • Ability to lead multiple projects and be accountable for outcome

  • 10+ years of Linux, Solaris, and Windows system administration

  • 5+ years of VMware administration

  • 5+ years of Cisco UCS / UCSM administration

  • 5+ years of NetApp SAN administration

  • Self-driven motivation to continuously learn and apply new technologies

  • Scripting and system automation (Perl, Python, PHP, Java) preferred

Job Requirements

Education and professional career: 

 

College degree in a technical or related field and 10 years professional experience, or 15 years professional-level related technical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and professional-level related technical experience desired.
