The Engineer III Transport Network Planning Engineer will be responsible for, but not limited to, network plans involving: Capacity Augments, Transport Overbuilds, Modernization, IP Support, Customer Engineering Support, Access Savings, Leased Network Facility Savings, and Reliability jobs. All these projects will include creating equipment budgets and administering well-organized Transport Network Plans (TNPs) that call out in specific detail the equipment and fiber routes needed to complete the project.  These plans will incorporate facilities for use with wireline, FttT, CLEC, ILEC, and Fixed Wireless networks.  Requires a wide range of experience, using professional concepts and company objectives to resolve issues in creative and effective ways.  Acts as a technical consultant within and outside assigned department in area of expertise.  Utilizes high level of communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Gather the required information to make well-informed decisions regarding how to implement new projects, driven by customer orders and network capacity. These decisions will be documented into plans that will be submitted for approval. These plans will take into consideration network efficiency, cost, time to implement, and priority of the project. 
  • Administer Transport Network Plans (TNPs) to internal Transport Engineering department.
  • Include equipment Bill of Materials (BOMs) that display total equipment costs.
  • Submit plans for approval.
  • Frequently collaborate with, occasionally leads, cross-departmental teams in problem solving.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Infinera/Coriant, Ciena/Cyan, Cisco, Fujitsu, Huawei, and other Fiber Optic Transmission Systems
  • Knowledge of DWDM/SONET/Layer2 technology, overall
  • Demonstrable entry-level experience in computer science, information systems, analytics and/or databases is a key skillset of interest
  • Good understanding of the Telecommunications industry, in depth knowledge of one or more engineering disciplines and vendor equipment
  • In-depth knowledge of accepted engineering practices
  • Computer software knowledge to include Microsoft Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, Word, and network planning tools, such as Metasolv
  • Excellent analytical and project management skills
  • Ability to prioritize projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Superior interpersonal skills; ability to work well with others

Education and Experience:  

College degree in Engineering or a related field and 3-5 years professional level experience; or 7+ years professional level related Engineering/Technical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and professional level related Engineering/Technical experience required.
