The Engineer II – OSP (Outside Plant) is responsible for designing and developing moderately complex Outside Plant projects related but not limited to copper, FttP, FttT, EIA, Special Circuits, and Equipment installations, modifications, upgrades and/or construction. This position will work on problems of complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors and will work closely with OSP Planning and Implementation teams on orders requiring construction to support the ordered product. Must have at least two years of telecom industry work experience with an Engineering degree OR six years of telecom construction experience with a high school diploma/GED   

  • Prepare Engineering Work Orders including field staking, design, and review of projects that support both existing and new network plant growth.
  • Strong OSP construction knowledge with the ability to read and create construction drawings to facilitate new builds, relocations, and emergency repairs.
  • Intermediate knowledge of permitting, contractor management, fiber splicing, project management with different types of underground and aerial cable plant installation and maintenance.
  • Communicate with city, county and state permitting agencies
  • Assist in the planning, analysis, and recommendations in support of new construction of outside plant network structures and facilities, including digital loop carrier systems and technology
  • Organize complex activities for the development, implementation, and maintenance of OSP engineering projects
  • Utilize a wide range of experience, sound engineering practices, and company objectives to resolve issues in creative and effective ways
  • Utilize a high level of communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships
  • Perform engineering design evaluations including cost-effective utilization of materials
  • Perform administrative work relating to projects and assignments
  • Promote a positive change in the company's business strategy through achievement of customer and internal specific objectives and technological innovation of practical and profitable nature
  • Identify pole ownership, right of way and permit requirements for proposed routes

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

College degree in Engineering or a related field and 2-4 years professional level experience; or 6+ years professional level related Engineering/Technical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and professional level related Engineering/Technical experience required.

  • Assess situations, seek multiple perspectives, gather additional information if necessary, identify key issues, to solve complex problems
  • Two years of telecom work experience and degree in Engineering (EE or Civil preferred) OR six years of telecom construction experience with high school diploma/GED
  • Comprehensive knowledge of accepted engineering practices and accounting procedures
  • Comprehensive knowledge of aerial and buried cable placement and splicing methods for copper and fiber, feeder and distribution cable pair design
  • General knowledge of Digital Loop Circuit site installation techniques
  • General knowledge of electronic pair gain design and deployment including transport requirements
  • Demonstrate proficient verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize daily tasks, and perform successfully in a fast-paced environment
  • General knowledge of JobTrac, J.D. Edwards, GComms and CAD/E systems (Microstation); preferred not required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in various climate and around heavy equipment
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Position is not eligible for relocation
