Senior Engineer/Consultant – Transport Architecture:

The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities include selection and evaluation of Metro and Longhaul optical technologies best suited for Windstream network and its customers. Success is measured by enhancing the Windstream customer experience by defining better and reliable high-speed solutions. Candidate will be responsible for technology planning of the future of Windstream’s Transport network making best use of current and evolving technologies.   Responsibilities also include testing and certification of optical equipment hardware and software, including DWDM gear, ROADMs, DCI platforms, and other network devices as relates to a service provider. Responsibilities also include testing new features and services and providing short and long-term network engineering guidance.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop optical transport technology roadmap and define target hardware and software release features
  • Develop lowest cost per bit strategies and transform legacy networks to monetize investment in embedded base infrastructure while increasing overall system capacity.
  • Analysis of multi-vendor interoperability and evaluation of standards-based versus proprietary solutions is required.
  • Measure, compare and quantify capital and expense for hardware and software selection.
  • Lead layer 1 network software upgrades by interfacing with equipment vendors, Engineering and Operations teams to drive roadmap and dependency requirements to support new HW/SW feature/functionality
  • Design, Write, and Publish Reference Architectures to guide the evolution of the Windstream’s Transport Network
  • Follow Industry trends and new technologies and incorporate them into a forward-looking 3-5 years Network development
  • Utilize high level communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain productive working relationships
  • Promote positive change in the company’s business strategy through achievement of customer specific objectives and technological innovation of practical and profitable nature


Job Requirements

Desired Requirements:

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of Layer 0, 1, 2 architecture, protocols, design, implementation, and operation
  • Good understanding of the Telecommunications industry, in depth knowledge of one or more engineering disciplines and vendor equipment
  • Excellent analytical and project management skills
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills
  • Strong technical writing skills for documenting test plans, test results, certification and application guides
  • Ability to independently manage workload and intergroup expectations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of optical and data networking as applies to a service provider
  • Strong knowledge of accepted service provider engineering practices
  • Strong computer software knowledge including Microsoft Office, MS Visio, Metasolv, and other custom planning tools.
  • Ability to stay current with economic and technological developments in the industry, including open transport development, programmable networks, and DevOps evolution of network engineering and operations.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

College degree and 10+ years professional level experience or an equivalent combination of education and professional level related experience desired.
