VMware Infrastructure Senior Engineer / Consultant / Architect Position

In this role, you will be a key player in supporting a business-critical VMware environment.  As the technical lead, you will be responsible for platform stability across multiple sites, and will assist with new deployments, configurations, operations, troubleshooting, and related projects.

About the job:  

Job Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Technical leader for the full VMware Infrastructure stack, to include:

  • VMware vCenter appliances and 25+ clusters running ESXi 6.7 (soon to be 7.x)
  • VMware vSAN storage
  • 300+ Physical Servers (Cisco UCS blades and C-series rack servers)
  • SAN storage – NetApp
  • Cisco UCS+NetApp (“Flexpod”) environments
  • Backups – Veeam, NetBackup, and AWS off-site
  • Networking – Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnects, Cisco Nexus and ACI switches
  • Cloud deployment experience a plus (AWS / Azure / other)

Quickly gain an in-depth understanding and comprehension of the overall architectural design of the environment, to include upstream / indirect components (switches, routing, firewalls, etc.).

Discover and evaluate the current environment.  Validate configurations / practices and advise on any recommended architectural changes, per best practices and technological advances. 

Advise, support, and lead the Infrastructure team with everything related to ongoing platform / site reliability, driving growth and efficiencies.

Assist with day-to-day workload, support tickets, new requests, etc.

Point-person / liaison for technical Q&A, problem solving, guidance, planning, and direction.

Capacity planning – Monitor and track compute and storage resource & usage trends to proactively plan for upcoming needs.

VMware PowerCLI scripting.

Configuration of Cisco and Juniper switches; Zoning setup for SAN switches.

Ability to conceptualize complex projects & tasks, and filter / communicate the break-down of specific requirements for each subset in the infrastructure stack. 

Lead triage effort and provide troubleshooting support for any outages.

Lead on POC / lab / pipeline project discovery discussions, understanding hardware requirements and configurations required, and assisting with deployments.

Leverage public cloud offerings (Azure / AWS) and deployments where applicable.

Vendor relations and negotiations around hardware needs, licensing, and support agreements.  


Job Requirements


About your skills and experience: 

  • Must be highly proficient with the key platforms used in our Infrastructure technology stack, as listed above
  • Strong communication (verbal and written), people, and presentation skills
  • Strong ability to work complex problems, evaluate information, and arrive at creative solutions
  • 5 years sysadmin experience with Linux / Windows servers; Solaris a plus
  • Ability to plan / lead multiple projects and be accountable for outcome
  • Self-driven ability to continuously learn and apply new technologies

Desired Qualifications:

College degree in a technical or related field, and 10 years professional experience with minimum of 5 years heavily involved in the platforms that are used in our VMware infrastructure.
