General Summary:

IP Network Engineer responsible for the standardization and optimization of Windstream’s IP/MPLS network, performing analysis, design preparation, and technical review for new implementations, upgrades, and/or services.  Provide engineering level support of Network Operations as it relates to potential network design improvements.

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Design and plan the deployment, maintenance, development, upgrade, and support of all IP/MPLS network devices.
  • Evaluate and standardize technologies and architectures in relation to the IP/MPLS network and service needs.
  • Perform software and hardware exhaustive testing based on network compliance standards.
  • Contact venders for support, faulty equipment replacement, and deployment of recommended fixes.
  • Author technical documentation related to IP/MPLS network and device configuration.
  • Configure and commission network devices and manage configuration back-ups.
  • Routinely develop and generate audits based on network standards and remediate device configurations to achieve compliance.
  • Produce periodic reports about the network activities, network performance, and capacity.
  • Engage in continuous improvement opportunities, and execute plans of preventive maintenance tasks
  • Assist in the development and execution for integration of IP/MPLS networks.
  • Develop automation and other internal systems & tools to assist in the care and feeding of the IP/MPLS network and integration activity.
  • Attends various meetings with all levels of management, departments, and vendors to ensure company objectives are met.
  • Participate in project meetings to coordinate and communicate activities related to IP/MPLS infrastructure, technologies and services.
  • Work closely with network operations and customer support to develop handoff documentation and training packages to ensure technologies and services are adequately supported.

Desired Qualifications/Education/Experience:

  • Proven working experience maintaining a large network with complex routing and switching technologies.
  • Excellent knowledge with routing protocols - OSPF, ISIS, and BGP.
  • Advanced knowledge of traffic engineering MPLS-Based Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPNs.
  • Proficiency in TCP/IP and communications protocols that make up the Internet architecture.
  • Strong knowledge of circuit design - Ethernet, SONET, TDM, multiplexing DS3/ T1s, microwave.
  • Hands on experience with configuring and troubleshooting Cisco, Juniper, and Nokia routers and switches.
  • Demonstrate oral and written communication, analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Understanding of maintenance process and tasks related to system administration.
  • Familiarity with various operating systems (OS) and server platforms.
  • Ability to create scripts in Python, Perl, or other language, is a plus

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

College degree in Engineering or a related field and 5-7 years professional level experience with 0-2 years supervisory experience for roles with supervision; or 9+ years professional level related Engineering/Technical experience with 0-2 years supervisory experience for roles with supervision; or an equivalent combination of education and professional level related Engineering/Technical experience required.
