Network Architecture Engineer Job Description:

Windstream Network Architecture continues building upon momentum in new intelligent optical network technology evolution in the Transport domain to expand the team in the network lab in Little Rock, AR. The desired candidate would have 5-7 years optical technology, engineering and network operations experience in communication service provider regional and core network ROADM, amplifier, coherent transmission, and packet/optical transport nodes and system/component supplier base. Windstream is seeking a network Architect to lead the evolution of Windstream’s key existing regional and core networks, extracting the newest capabilities and lowest cost profiles within the Windstream network.

Build your experience in optical transport network technologies to new levels and domains while working with the leading-edge technologies to grow and expand Windstream’s industry-leading optical networks within and beyond North America.

The optical Network Architect would take a lead role in Windstream’s Transport network architecture and evolution, looking ahead towards next gen components and systems to propel Windstream to the front edge of transport network technology and network cost efficiency.  The ideal candidate would take a hands-on role to lead the evolution of the existing and establishment of new testbeds, enhance testing methods/procedures, and develop test case automation within the network lab facility. The candidate would work with peers in partner organizations to select and integrate hardware and software for network deployment, write and execute test plans, document platform, product, and service configurations and support network automation programs requiring lab resources.

Little Rock, AR local office footprint, with implied adherence to network lab facility access restrictions, ability to support partial WFH, and company travel as required/available.


Analyzes requirements to meet growth and evolution in Transport domain platforms and products. Recommend new hardware and software for testing and deployment. Write test plans, execute tests, install and remove hardware and connectivity in the lab. Write scripts and develop tools to automate test cases. Cost model new network systems and technologies in comparison to each other and to existing network designs. Perform hands on testing with network test equipment in a lab environment. Provide documentation and handoff of tested and approved transport hardware to downstream Engineering and Operations teams. Support deployment through development of new documentation and quality assurance through network first office application. Normally receives modest level of instruction on day-to-day work. Must evolve to anticipate and understand new technology and its application to the Windstream network.

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

In depth understanding of telecommunications industry; in depth knowledge of one or more engineering disciplines and vendor equipment including Transport, Ethernet, IP, network management, and test equipment operations. Ability to build economic cost models for network projects, network architectures, and new technology platforms. In depth knowledge of accepted communications service provider engineering practices. Computer software knowledge to include Microsoft Office, Custom Planning Tools, Databases, computer and network operating systems and EMS applications. Good analytical skills; the ability to prioritize projects; great oral and written communication skills; and great interpersonal skills. Good project management skills required to balance timelines and priorities of lab and network projects.

Education and Experience:

College degree and 3-5 years experience or 7 years equivalent related Engineering/Technical experience or a combination of education and related Engineering/Technical experience required.

Desired Qualifications:

Demonstrated ability to stay current with the economic and technological developments in the communications service provider industry.
