Engineer 3 - Job Description

General Description

The core function of this role is the creation and evolution of standards documentation for the Windstream Transport network, to ensure that Transport Network growth is consistent, efficient, expandable, flexible, predictable, repeatable and reliable.

Essential Job Function

  • Create and maintain transport network standards documentation, such as device configuration standards, service configuration standards, DCN design standards, best practices, quick reference guides, etc.

  • Responsibilities include new platform/product/tool/process introduction and legacy platform/product/tool/process evolution plans for layer 0-2.

  • Work with Vendors and peer organizations to guide transport platform and product roadmaps to deliver key features and aggressive pricing.

  • Guide new HW/SW/product/feature introduction from Architecture certification through all required operationalization tasks to WIN General Availability.  While this role is directly responsible for only a subset of those tasks, it is also responsible for ensuring all external tasks are identified, owned and completed prior to GA.

  • Enable ongoing cost compression within the transport network.

  • Identify, design and deliver automation, reporting and tool improvements to drive increased network consistency, efficiency, throughput and reliability.

  • Perform occasional maintenance, regression and interop testing of various transport platforms.

  • Serve as product/platform/tool SME for Network Engineering and for technical escalations from other business units.

  • Guide decisions for Maintenance and Services support contracts.

  • Exercises authority and able to operate with minimal instruction on day-to-day work.

Minimum Qualifications

  • In-depth understanding of telecommunications industry practices, including the planning, engineering, test, and/or troubleshooting of layer 0-2 networks.

  • Detailed technical understanding of xWDM, ROADM, SONET, DCS, BITS and ETHERNET technologies.

  • Meaningful experience with specific xWDM, ROADM, SONET, DCS, BITS or ETHERNET vendor platforms.

  • Good analytical skills with the ability to handle multiple simultaneous projects and prioritize tasks.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.  Good interpersonal skills.

Job Requirements


  • College degree and 3-5 years of experience with layer 0-2 networks, or 7 years of equivalent related Engineering/Technical experience, or a 5-6 year blended combination of education and related Engineering/Technical experience is required.
